Should there be a need to dispose off medical waste and accredited waste disposal person or company must be contacted. Medical waste includes, but not limited to:
- Waste generated during medical research, testing, diagnosis, immunization, or treatment of either human beings or animals.
- Some examples are culture dishes, glassware, bandages, gloves, discarded sharps like needles or scalpels, swabs, and tissue.
Please contact the department of health or the department of environmental affairs should you need to dispose off medical waste.
You cannot put electrical appliances or other equipment like fridges, freezers, dishwashers or televisions into a skip mixed with “normal” waste. You need to inform us in advance if you have such waste materials so that we can make the necessary arrangements. Electricals waste be recycled separately.
Gas cylinders must be disposed off in a strictly controlled way. Gas cylinders are not allowed at dumping sites. Simple Skip does not take them for disposal as we are not authorised to do so and do not possess the necessary certificates or permission to dispose off or transport them.
It must be noted that asbestos or any material containing asbestos most never be put in the Simple Skip Bins. The South African government has specific laws relating to the disposal of asbestos or asbestos containing materials. The national environmental management: Waste Act 2008 (Act 59 of 2008) clearly defines the process to follow when disposing off asbestos or asbestos containing materials.
Do not put used and unused batteries inside a Simple Skip. All batteries contain various metals and chemicals which mean they must be treated separately, so please do not put batteries in your Simple Skip, even small ones. Please take them to battery recycling boxes at your local supermarket or petrol station, or search online for your closest battery recycling centre. Car batteries cannot be thrown away in skips either, because they contain high traces of lead. Lead is extremely poisonous and needs to be treated in a particular way. There are marked battery disposal units at your local supermarket for responsible disposal.
Cellphones also do not belong in a Simple Skip, should you require to dispose off an old cellphone, let us know in advance so that we can arrange to dispose it off in a responsible manner.
The following chemicals cannot be placed in a Simple Skip
- Paint
- Fuels (petrol, diesel, paraffin, kerosene, etc)
- Used motor oil
- Fluorescent lights (Contains mercury and other hazardous chemicals)
- Led lights
- Other liquid or solid chemicals
